Wine Dealers is an independent editorial site about buying wine in Australia. It exists to explain the channels, the label, the region system and the law. It does not exist to move cases.
The name can sound like a shopfront. It is not one. We do not hold a liquor licence, we do not take payment for bottles, and we do not stand behind a courier with a carton. When these pages say “buy”, they mean “buy from a licensed business you have chosen”, not “buy from us”.
What we publish
The guides cover the decisions that come up before and after a lawful sale:
- How to choose a merchant
- How cellar doors work
- How auctions work
- How to store and cellar wine
- How Australian GIs are organised
- How to read a label
- How the 18+ rules apply, including online
Each page is written to be used. The first paragraph answers the question a search or a conversation usually starts with. The rest is context you can stop reading when you have enough.
What we refuse to invent
We do not invent prices. We do not invent rankings. We do not invent awards, visitor numbers, or quotations. We do not name retailers, auction houses or cellar doors as recommendations. If a sentence would only work with a favourite shop in it, we delete the sentence.
Where a fact is official, we cite the body that keeps it. Geographical indications and labelling composition sit with Wine Australia. Common alcohol laws sit with the Australian Government health department and with state liquor authorities. Responsible drinking information sits with DrinkWise and with clinicians, not with a website that also happens to like vineyards.
If we describe a practice — how a timed auction closes, how a courier asks for identification — we describe it as a pattern, not as the secret of one business.
Who it is for
It is for adults. You must be 18 or older to buy alcohol in Australia, and these pages assume an adult reader. If you are under 18, this is not a shopping guide for you.
It is for people who want to buy wine without being hurried: a household filling a weeknight rack, a traveller planning cellar doors, someone facing a first auction catalogue, someone trying to understand why two bottles from the same region taste nothing alike.
It is not for people looking for a discount code, a dealer score, or a way around an age check. We will not help with those.
How the pages are built
The site is a small set of long guides rather than a stream of news. That is a choice. Wine retail does not need a daily headline as much as it needs a clear account of the system. When a rule changes — a labelling mark, a delivery code, a register entry — the relevant guide should change with it.
You will not find a comments layer or a user-generated league table. Those formats drift toward the very rankings we refuse. If something is wrong, write to us. A factual correction is more useful than a hot take.
Independence
Independence here means the guides are not a catalogue. We do not take a cut of a bottle you buy after reading. We do not sell a “featured merchant” slot. If that ever changed, this page would have to change first, because the rest of the site would no longer match its opening sentence.
Trademarks and brand names that appear in examples belong to their owners. Mention of a GI or a grape is not an endorsement of a producer.
Alcohol
Wine is alcohol. The site repeats that fact because the trade sometimes talks as if a tasting were only culture. Culture does not cancel the 18+ rule, the standard drink mark, or the pregnancy warning. If alcohol is causing harm, ignore the rest of these pages and seek help — DrinkWise is one public door, and a general practitioner is another.
Contact
Questions about the guides, corrections, and press queries about the editorial project can go through the contact form. Please do not use it to ask us to sell you wine, to recommend a named dealer, or to settle a dispute with a seller. Those conversations belong with the licensed business and, if needed, the regulator.
Thank you for reading as an adult, and for treating the people who pour, cart and licence this trade as workers in a regulated market rather than as extras in a lifestyle photograph.
